Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (10 April 1755 - 2 July 1843) was a German physician who developed homoeopathy in the context of hazardous medical practices of his era. His 1790 self-experiment contributed to the historical doctrine he called Similia Similibus Curentur (likes are cured by likes); it should not be presented as an established biological law.
Father of Homoeopathic Medicine & Proving Pharmacopoeia
Born in Meissen, Saxony, Samuel Hahnemann displayed exceptional intellectual talent early in life. He mastered seven languages including German, Latin, Greek, English, French, Italian, Arabic, and Syriac. He pursued medical studies at the University of Leipzig and Vienna, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Erlangen in 1779.
Despite a successful early career as a respected physician and author of authoritative texts on chemistry and pharmacy, Hahnemann grew deeply troubled by 18th-century medical practices. During this era, medicine relied heavily on "heroic" treatments such as unsterilized bloodletting, severe intestinal leeching, and toxic doses of mercury, arsenic, and lead.
Recognizing that these violent interventions often caused more harm than the disease itself, Hahnemann temporarily gave up medical practice. To support his family, he turned to translating European medical texts and conducting chemistry research, laying the groundwork for a safer system of healing.
"My sense of duty would not permit me to treat the pathological state of my suffering brethren according to unknown views, or to prescribe remedies which owe their reputation to mere guesswork... I could not conscientiously treat the sick with toxic preparations."
The pivotal moment in medical history that gave birth to Homoeopathy.
In 1790, while translating Dr. William Cullen's Treatise on the Materia Medica, Hahnemann read that Cinchona bark (Peruvian bark) cured malaria because of its bitter, astringent properties. Skeptical of this explanation, he decided to test the substance on himself.
Hahnemann ingested repeated doses of Cinchona bark while completely healthy. To his amazement, he experienced intermittent fever, severe chills, joint stiffness, and palpitations: the exact symptom picture of malaria fever.
Hahnemann interpreted his Cinchona self-experiment as support for the principle of similars and later published the doctrine in 1796. This is a historical account, not evidence that Cinchona or homoeopathy cures malaria.
Written across six revised editions, the Organon serves as the comprehensive handbook of classical homoeopathy, establishing the nature of health, vital force, disease etiology, and patient evaluation.
A 6-volume masterwork documenting exact symptom patterns produced by medicinal substances tested on healthy human provers under strict observational conditions.
Introduced the revolutionary theory of chronic miasms (Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis), identifying underlying constitutional susceptibilities responsible for recurring ailments.
